Wheatmore-Ledford game postponed

Sep. 1—TRINITY — Wheatmore's home football game against Ledford scheduled for Friday has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocol.

It will now be scheduled for Sept. 24. Wheatmore will not play JV or varsity this week.

With High Point Central's home game against Southwest Guilford moved to Thursday at 7 p.m., there are now six games on Friday's schedule — including two home games.

East Davidson will host Trinity, while Ragsdale will host Oak Grove. Both games are set for 7:30.

On the road, High Point Christian will face the North Wake Saints, Bishop McGuinness will take on Graham, Glenn will visit Chambers, and Southern Guilford will travel to Western Guilford.

High Point Christian's game and Glenn's game will start at 7. The others will all start at 7:30.

Thomasville's home game against T.W. Andrews will also not be played due to COVID-19 protocols.

KERNERSVILLE — Anakin Leister scored for North Carolina Leadership Academy in a 1-1 tie versus McMichael on Monday.

TRINITY — South Rowan edged Wheatmore 21-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-13 in nonconference action at Wheatmore on Monday,

Gracie Hodgin spiked 13 kills for the Warriors (2-2). Emma Atwell provided seven and Taghan Monney dished 20 assists.

South Rowan won the JV match 25-23 and 25-11, dropping Wheatmore to 0-4.

BISHOP, S. STOKES

WALNUT COVE — Bishop McGuinnis came from a set down and defeated host South Stokes 24-26, 25-12, 27-25, 25-23 in nonconference play Monday.

Susanna Drake slammed eight kills for the Villains (4-3-1) and Finley Miller had seven. Jeanna Hauk dished 20 assists.Emma Briody scooped 19 digs and Grace Strader had 12.

SW GUILFORD, N. GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford edged visiting Northern Guilford 5-4 in a Metro 4A Conference match Monday.

Audrey Serb, Tran Nguyen, Grace Parsons and Kate Cherry won in singles for the Cowgirls, and Serb/McGinnis won in doubles. Southwest improves to 3-2 and 2-1 in the conference.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

HIGH POINT, VCU

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Freshman outside hitter Sydney Palazzolo fashioned a double-double in kills and digs as High Point University volleyball team topped VCU 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 on Sunday as the Panthers finished play in the three-day JMU Invitational.

The freshman finished the match with a team-high 21 kills and just as many digs for her first career double-double and 20-20 performance. She needed only the first two sets to get her double-double (10 kills, 14 digs) and tacked on 11 more kills and seven digs in the final two sets for good measure, including seven kills in the third set alone.

Three other Panthers joined Palazzolo in double digits in kills, with junior Maggie Salley finishing second on the team with 11 and sophomore Dylan Maberry and junior Maria Miggins each with 10. Miggins also had a double-double in the match and narrowly missed out on a triple-double as she led the team with 31 assists and picked up eight digs. Freshman libero Jenny Wessling led the Panthers (2-1) in digs for the second match in a row, totaling 23 over the four sets on Sunday.

Both freshmen standouts, Palazzolo and Wessling earned spots on the All-Tournament Team at the invitational's conclusion. Palazzolo led HPU with an average of 4.71 kills per set and a hitting percentage of .358 over the weekend while Wessling averaged 4.75 digs per set.

Palazzolo was also named the Volleyball Player of the Week in the Big South on Monday and Wessling was selected as Freshman of the Week.

Palazzolo posted a .358 hitting percentage, 33 kills (4.71 per set), 27 digs (3.86 per set) and 38.0 points (5.43 per set) in leading High Point to wins over Illinois State and VCU. Palazzolo led the entire JMU Invitational field in kills per set.

Wessling opened with 15 digs in her collegiate debut against James Madison, had 19 digs in a three-set win over Illinois State in addition to the 23 digs against VCU. She added seven assists and three service aces for HPU.

High Point continues its long stretch of road matches to begin the season this weekend in West Point, New York. It'll play matches against Sacred Heart and Columbia on Friday, Army on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday.

AREA RACING

LABONTE WINS

DILLON, S.C. — Bobby Labonte of High Point won a 99-lap race at Dillion Motor Speedway on Saturday for his first victory on the regional SMART Modified Tour.

Labonte qualified fastest, got third-starting position by draw and finished two seconds ahead of Brandon Ward. Danny Bohn, John Smith and Jeremy Gertsner completed the top five.

CARAWAY SPEEDWAY

ASHEBORO — Jason York (Late Model Stock), Mike CHambers (Challenger), Johnny Baker (Mini-Stock) and Justin Smith (UCAR) were the winners Saturday night at Caraway Speedway.

LOCAL GOLF

HIGH POINT — Scott Newton was the men's winner in the club championship tournament that ended Sunday at High Point Country Club's Willow Creek course.

Newton shot 72-70-69 for a 54-hole total of 5-under-par 211. Newton's son Grady finished second at 217 with Craig Stroup third at 224 and Wes Keever fourth at 229.

EC NIebauer won the women's title with a 36-hole total of 151. Jack Hawks won the Legends title with a 168. Adian Wilson took the boys 13-14 title by carding 142. Cooper Tomlin shot 88 for 18 holes (nine each day) to take the 10-12 boys title. Owen Heery carded 90 to win in the 9-and-under boys division.
