How well-versed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe do you expect the average 75-year-old to be? If the answer is “very,” then come sit by Wheel of Fortune fans, who put longtime host Pat Sajak on blast for a pop culture oversight.

It all started during the latest episode of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, when The Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel Osment, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actress Tatyana Ali, and restaurateur Curtis Stone competed on behalf of their chosen charities. When Ali solved a puzzle with the answer “Eggs Benedict Cumberbatch,” Sajak said, “We know eggs benedict. Explain Benedict Cumberbatch for those who [don’t know].”

Ali explained that Benedict Cumberbatch is a famous British actor, though her delivery wavered when she was confused by the rookie question. Then, the jig was up, and Sajak explained, “I put the onus on her because I didn’t have the answer. So I pretended like I was just saying 'Tell us. I, of course, know it, but you tell us.’ And that was a little host trick, if you want to know … My apologies, Mr. Cumberbatch. But I spend a lot of time in my basement. I have no idea what's going on.”

Sajak’s oversight had a polarizing effect on Wheel of Fortune Nation, with fans logging onto Twitter to sound off on whether Sajak should have known about Cumberbatch, or whether viewers can cut him some slack. “You should not host a trivia game show if you know nothing,” one viewer tweeted. “You should apologize. Benedict is an amazing actor and has never given a bad performance. Shame on you Pat,” another said. Marvel fans jumped in too, with one such fan tweeting, “Pat Sajak doesn’t know who Benedict Cumberbatch is? That’s just (Dr.) Strange.”

But others were eager to give Sajak a break. “Nobody should need to apologize for not knowing who somebody is. I don’t even think Benedict Cumberbatch is entitled to expect that,” one fan tweeted. “I don’t know who he is either. Until I looked him up on the internet. Now I learned something & got a good laugh and need to come out of my cave every once in a while,” another said.

But the damage was already done. As chatter among viewers continued, Wheel of Fortune ultimately took to Twitter to issue an apology to Cumberbatch.

We have just one question for Sajak: We are in a global pandemic, after all, so why not take advantage of this permit to hermit and start your Marvel Cinematic Universe journey? We know exactly where you can get started.
