Wheeler, Johnson combine for 52 in South Carolina State rout

NORFOLK, Va. (Courtesy of Norfolk State Athletics) – The Norfolk State women’s basketball team led by seniors Diamond Johnson and Kierra Wheeler routed South Carolina State, 87-25, at Joseph Echols Hall on Saturday.

The Spartans (18-5, 7-1 MEAC) defended home court with a 62-point rout of the Bulldogs (1-22, 0-8) for their largest win margin of the season. With a six game home streak, the Spartans stay hot not only at home but in the conference as well.

Kierra Wheeler reached 1,000 points in her career after posting 26 points against the Bulldogs. She collected her 10th double-double of the season after recording 12 rebounds.

Diamond Johnson has had 20 or more points in two straight games after her 26-point performance against the Bulldogs. She shot 11-21 going 4-of-9 from three-point range, to go along with five steals, four assists, and four rebounds.

With their win over the Bulldogs, the Spartans moved to 7-1 in the MEAC. The 62-point win was the largest win margin of the season since they defeated South Carolina State by 61 points (94-33) earlier this season on Jan. 6 on the road.

Allowing only 25 points is the fewest amount they have allowed this season. The Bulldogs leading scorer only finished with five points as the Spartans held everyone below six points.

Freshman guards Da’Brya Clark and Anjanae Richardson each had impressive double digit performances in the win. Clark had 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Richardson finished with 13 points and four assists, knocking down 3 of her 5 three-pointers.
