When's National Pizza Day? Seems like it's every day in Bucks County as we gain fame for pies

When it comes to Bucks County's favorite foods, we had a hunch pizza was high on the list. That suspicion was reaffirmed over these past months when we reported on pizzeria lines extending out the doors, nationally recognized foodies critiquing our slices and an overwhelming response to our reader pizza poll. Not that you need anymore reason to indulge, but be aware National Pizza Day is Friday Feb. 9, so work up an appetite with a review of our recent coverage of all things pizza.

'A football pizza' in Doylestown

Super Bowl Sunday is a busy time for pizzerias, but it could be an especially good time for Lucatelli's, which received this review from Barstool Sports' David Portnoy: "It's like a good, very traditional high-end football pizza. It almost has like, a more New York-vibe than a Phlly-vibe pizza..."

Review in Chalfont leads to big business

Portnoy also stopped in at Peppino's in Chalfont and his review of their tomato pie launched a pizza frenzy.

The owners of Peppino's were thrilled with the extra foot traffic generated over the following weeks. "We opened yesterday to a line out the door!" said a Facebook post.

Portnoy assessed the tomato pie at 8.3 on his Web site but verbally said 7.8 in the video at the venue. "I think it's really good, and I'd come back. It's a little sloppy, but I really do like it, and I like tomato pies."

Bensalem shop a slice above the rest

Inspired by all the pizza hubbub, we at phillyburbs.com decided to fashion up a poll of our readers to pick your favorite pizza in Bucks County. More than 36,000 voted and 14,000 chose Valley Pizza in Bensalem No. 1.

Critics choices from Washington Post

The Washington Post devised a ranking of the best Pizza in America: Region-by-Region and two from phillyburbs area made the grade: Highest score in Pennsylvania for Neapolitan-style pizza went to Spuntino Wood-Fired Pizzeria in Doylestown Borough. A few miles to the south, The Post recognized Steel Penny Cafe on Oakdale Road in Hatboro as having one of the best Detroit-style pizzas.
