Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated on Jan. 17, and in South Florida, a variety of activities are planned virtually and in-person for the holiday. Many gatherings and presentations will require advance reservations with limited capacity and seating. In-person events are subject to change, including cancellations. Call ahead before attending.

Broward County

Jan. 15

Sunrise. Youth Poetry Workshop, 9 a.m-4 p.m., Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise. Honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., this intensive poetry-writing workshop is open to students ages 13-18. Write Your Dream is a creative and engaging poetry-writing workshop that blends the literary arts and civic responsibility. Each poet will receive breakfast, lunch, a book, “Reparations Now” by Ashley M. Jones, and writing supplies. This hands-on session will be facilitated by Darius V. Daughtry, founder/creative director of the Art Prevails Project. Students will also have the opportunity to view the City’s 2 p.m. screening of “Race.” Free. Young Jesse Owens (Stephan James) becomes a track-and-field sensation while attending Ohio State University in the early 1930s. With guidance from coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis), Owens gains national recognition for breaking numerous records. After heated debates, the United States decides not to boycott the Olympics in Nazi Germany. Liberty City. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Covering 8 miles along Northwest 54th Street from 10th to 32nd avenues. This route traces the steps that Dr. King traveled in Miami during his frequent visits. Featuring high-school marching bands, student athletes, dance teams, drill teams and cheerleaders on foot, as well as floats, cars and fire trucks carrying local politicians, union leaders and activists. Carnival dancers performances. The parade concludes near Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, where a Family Festival takes place noon-5 p.m. with live music, dance, cultural programming and theatrical performances. bit.ly/34jV04f

Miami. Pre-Parade 5K Run & Fitness Walk, 8 a.m. at the MLK Plaza Metrorail Station. Runners should arrive for registration between 6:30 and 7:45 a.m.
