Where is the best ice cream in Hillsdale County?

Summer is a great time to explore local ice cream shops in Hillsdale County. Here’s a few favorites to try the next time you have an ice cream craving.

The Udder Side

Kelly Cole said The Udder Side, located in Jonesville, is her favorite because it has her favorite flavor of ice cream.

“I'm not one to rave about ice cream,” she said, “But my whole family knows that I am crazy about Coconutty.”

Coconutty is just one of The Udder Side’s many ice cream flavors to try. Don’t forget its different ice cream creations you can also choose from, from a regular ice cream sundae to “Road Kill” or “Mud Pie”

“The best ice cream anywhere!” Cole said.

Scoops (in Litchfield)

Scoops is located in Litchfield and features a wide variety of ice cream and other treats. The “Home of the Terrier Treats,” has weekly Sunday sundae special and different soft serve ice creams to pick from.

Overflowing Cups and Cones

Overflowing Cups and Cones, formerly Vanity, is another popular favorite named by many local residents.

Located across from the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds, it specializes in ice cream and coffee.

Reading Pizza Barn (in Reading)

The Reading Pizza Barn, located in Reading, has many delicious sweet treats like banana splits and mixes.

With its soft serve, twisted cones, and ice cream flavor of the week, the Pizza Barn is a great place to stop by for your ice cream needs.

Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen is a recent addition to Hillsdale’s businesses and has quickly become a community favorite with blizzards and signature upside-down cones.

Taylor Klimmer, store manager at Dairy Queen, said for those not familiar with Dairy Queen and its ice cream products, a blizzard is one of the first things they should try.

“Our blizzard is our No. 1 seller,” Klimmer said, “It comes in a bunch of different varieties and flavors, so definitely the blizzard is the way to go.”

Coney’s and Swirls

Sundaes and specialty ice cream is the forte of this little shop located in downtown Hillsdale. Coney’s and Swirls is a great spot to stop by as you do your shopping or take a stroll downtown with your family. Don’t forget its slushies and other frozen drinks.

Freddies Freeze (in Somerset)

Freddies Freeze, located in Somerset, is known for its soft serve and hand-dipped ice cream, soft serve frozen yogurt, and so much more.

Sherry Halliwill and her husband Brian have managed the shop since 1989.

“The location is great for locals and travelers,” Halliwill said, “We have lots of parking and open outdoor space for groups of all sizes, including pets.”

There are many flavors to choose from, but Sherry said vanilla and lemon are favorites.

“Brian believes that vanilla is truly the finest of the flavors! We hear all the time about how far people drive to get our lemon soft serve ice cream.”
