With Mardi Gras around the corner, many will be looking for the most decadent dessert of the season − the king cake.

The classic Mardi Gras dessert, which features a sweet dough coated in glaze and sprinkles — and a hidden plastic baby inside — makes its way to local bakeries and shops each January. The cakes are made for the community throughout Mardi Gras season until Mardi Gras day, which occurs this year on Tuesday, March 1.

To find a cake this season, here are some local shops in Monroe and West Monroe to check out:

Albritton's offers a variety of king cake sizes and flavors. King cake lovers can pick up an 8-inch, 10-inch, 14-inch or 16-inch king cake. Fillings include cream cheese, Bavarian cream and fruit flavors, such as strawberry, cherry and lemon.
