Chris Evans wears a classic cable-knit sweater in the new murder mystery ensemble film Knives Out, and, as it’s wont to do, the internet has been losing it a little.

Thirsty tweets and online analyses of said sweater have abounded, with writers losing “all concept of time” in movie theaters and producing insights like: “...scientists need to hurry up and finish time travel so Chris Evans' sweater can go back to the moment of my birth and swaddle my little Baby Yoda body in its cable-knit cords for my entire life.”

Who could have predicted Evans losing the Captain America cape to sport normal, real-guy clothing would spur such a passionate reaction?

All hyperbole aside, the internet is on to something here, and you might want to consider making this type of sweater your everyday winter basic.

The actor sports the classic cream-colored cable-knit pullover in his portrayal of Ransom Drysdale, the spoiled grandson of a wealthy crime novelist who turns up dead during a family gathering; what ensues is a whodunnit that’s one half crime drama and one half comedy.

Knives Out costume designer Jenny Eagan spilled to The Hollywood Reporter that, caught up in the rush of costume fittings shortly before shooting began on the ensemble film, she had no idea where the Aran cable-knit sweater was from, but she chose it to convey the character’s privilege and entitlement.

An old-school knit sweater gives off a bit of an East Coast prep school vibe, but Eagan added layers to the characterization with intentional distressing, taking a Dremel tool and sandpaper to the pullover to convey a careless, haphazard quality, the mark of a man who has owned so many nice things his entire life he doesn’t bother taking care of them.

While that may be true of Ransom Drysdale in Knives Out (who Evans describes as “so despicable”), we choose to interpret pop culture’s ebullient embrace of Evans’ careworn sweater as validation of the inherent coolness in one’s wardrobe being a little frayed at the edges.

A good cable-knit sweater is basically the wintertime equivalent of the perfect fitted t-shirt, just form-fitting enough to hint at a good physique underneath but not at all skin-tight, instead boasting a relaxed, not-trying-too hard ease.

The second half of the Evans sweater-mania equation (beside the fact that MCU veterans tend to incite Beatle-esque mania no matter what they do) is achieving that lived-in feel. No need to break out the tool box, though. Just know that the classic style will only get better with time, so don’t fret over a few inevitable snags here and there--that will only add to the sweater’s character.

Though the origin of Evans’ Knives Out sweater is as mysterious as the film’s central whodunnit plot, there are plenty of similar options to be had, so you can be the subject of thirst, from purveyors of old-school wardrobe basics like LL Bean, to modern fashion purveyors like J.Crew, and, of course, Amazon.

Consider layering one under a blazer for the office or adding it to your winter weekend jeans and coat uniform. We’ll leave the breaking in to you.
