Where to get COVID vaccines and flu shots in Fond du Lac, plus more news in weekly dose
FOND DU LAC — As fall begins, there typically is an increase in respiratory illnesses including flu, RSV and COVID-19. Vaccines that combat these illnesses are available in Fond du Lac County.
Lower your chance of catching or spreading a respiratory virus with handwashing/cleaning, staying home if you are feeling ill, avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands, covering your coughs/sneezes and getting vaccinated.
Most insurance plans cover the cost of flu and COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, the updated COVID-19 vaccine is available at no cost if you are uninsured or your health insurance plan does not cover it.
To locate a flu or COVID-19 vaccine, visit vaccines.gov or contact your pharmacy or health care provider.
The Fond du Lac County Health Department, in partnership with the Fond du Lac Family YMCA and Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac, is offering a youth flu vaccination clinic for ages 6 months to 18 years.
The clinic will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Fond Du Lac County Health Department City/County Building, third floor, 160 S. Macy St. Appointments are required. To schedule, call 920-929-3085.

DAR thanks veterans at 'Share Night' Oct. 23 at Culver's
The Daughters of the American Revolution and Oshkosh Culver’s will host a “Share Night” 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Fond du Lac Culver’s, 969 E. Johnson St.
Veterans will receive two “free shakes” — one a sweet treat or shake along with a handshake from a DAR member.
Food proceeds will benefit the Wisconsin Society’s state-owned historic properties, Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters and the Garrison one-room schoolhouse in Portage, as well as a Service to Veterans Fund established to support veteran activities in Wisconsin.
The National Society also appoints teams of DAR volunteers to assist in programs and support of Veterans Administration hospitals and facilities.

Ripon library hosts session on using Libby and a pizza party
Ripon Public Library will offer a chance to learn about Libby and a family Halloween event in the coming week.
“Learn to Love Libby” will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 24. Use the Libby app to borrow electronic books, audiobooks and magazines from the library. Take your device and library card.
From 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27, families can enjoy the Slightly Spooky Special. Librarian Linda DeCramer will perform stories and sing-along songs. A pizza and ice cream party will follow. Costumes encouraged for all ages.

Drop-in escape room at Fond du Lac library open Oct. 26-27
The Fond du Lac Public Library, 32 Sheboygan St., will offer a drop-in Candyland Escape Room Oct. 26 and 27. It will be open while the library is open both days.
The escape room is best for school-age children who are able to read and do simple math (with their family).
A Monster Party will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 28. It includes a story time, simple crafts and a scavenger hunt.

Chili supper set at St. Stephen's in Rosendale
St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, N5680 Towne Road, Rosendale, will host its annual Chili Supper from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26.
The all-you-care-to-eat dinner includes chili, cheese, crackers, bread and dessert. The cost is a free-will donation.
Full moon walk at Eldorado Marsh open to public
Enjoy a full moon walk with members of the Fond du Lac Audubon Society, beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 26. Meet at the end of Dike Road on the east side of Eldorado Marsh.
Participants should dress for the weather and wear good hiking shoes. Walks will be canceled if raining or totally overcast.

'Commonalities' exhibit features work of Benjamin D. Rinehart
“Commonalities,” an exhibit of work by Lawrence University artist Benjamin D. Rinehart, will run Oct. 27 through Dec. 8 in Caestecker Gallery, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, at Ripon College. An opening reception will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 27, in Demmer Recital Hall.
The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
In a news release, Rinehart said of his work: “The two series that are showcased, ‘7 Hopes for Humanity’ and ‘The Boys & Bubs,’ speak to universal truths and challenge notions of what constitutes a family. I ask the viewer to be open and place themselves into an alternate perspective as they interact with the work.”
Rinehart is a professor of printmaking and artist books at Lawrence. His work is included in more than 60 public collections and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. He received a bachelor of fine arts from Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and a master of fine arts from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He lectures and teaches as a visiting artist at various institutions around the country.

Local ATV/UTV traffic to increase ahead of charity ride
The Kettle Moraine ATV Association, the Lakeshore ATV/UTV Club and the Wisconsin ATV/UTV Association will host the 16th Annual ATV/UTV Charity Ride Oct. 28 at the Washington County Fair Park in West Bend. Funds raised will benefit Make-A-Wish Wisconsin.
Organizers want local residents and motorist to be aware there will be a larger than normal number of these vehicles traveling authorized road routes throughout Dodge, Fond du Lac, Ozaukee, Sheboygan and Washington counties.
Registration for the event runs 7:30 to 9 a.m. Oct. 28 at the Washington County Fair Park. It is open to the public; passenger vehicles may participate and are welcome.

Quad Care expands Lomira center, hosts open house
Quad Care has enhanced its Lomira center and has immediate openings for school-age programs. The center is open to all families in the community.
An open house will be held 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 and 26 at N11896 Highway 175, Lomira. Those attending will have the $75 enrollment fee waived if they sign up at the open house.
During the open house, guests can tour the newly expanded center, meet the teachers and participate in a raffle and giveaways.
The program provides before- and after-school care for ages 5 to 12 with busing to and from Lomira School District, including morning and afternoon 4K.
