Where does Fresno rank as the safest city to drive in California?

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Fresno has been ranked as the safest city to drive in California, according to Heidari Law Group from data obtained from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

The data analysis compared the total population in cities and the number of car accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities. It then compared the information to the corresponding averages of the 10 cities in question and examined the daily vehicle miles traveled (DMVT) per city to establish their overall scores.

Based on the formula from the data, the top five safest cities to drive in are:

  1. Fresno, CA

  2. Los Angeles, CA

  3. San Jose, CA

  4. San Diego, CA

  5. Bakersfield, CA

The approach of collecting the data allowed researchers to make city-to-city comparisons while accounting for population differences.

Fresno secured the top spot on the list as the safest city for driving in California. The study stated that it owes its ranking to a combination of meticulous urban planning and proactive safety measures, according to the study.

The study says that Fresno has strategically invested in traffic management infrastructure and robust law enforcement to ensure a secure driving environment. It also says that Fresno has prioritized public awareness campaigns, fostering a culture of responsible driving among its residents.

According to the study, enhanced community engagement,  coupled with effective law enforcement strategies, has contributed to a significant reduction in both fatal and injury-inducing crashes.

Based on information by the California Office of Traffic Safety in 2021, Fresno had a population of 542,829 with 1,351 crashes and a DMVT of 4,709,085.
