Selena Quintanilla Pérez’s birthday, or Selena Day in Texas, is Sunday, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate the Queen of Tejano music this weekend.

Selena’s April 16 birthday was declared Selena Day by Texas Gov. George W. Bush in 1995, a short time after the 23-year-old was killed that year. Selena’s impact on the Latin music scene was astronomical and led to the genre’s popularity across the country.

Selena was shot and killed in Corpus Christi by her former fan club president who had gotten caught embezzling from the singer’s business. Since her death, Selena has continued to be a pop-culture icon and is celebrated every year as fans mourn her passing.

Free Selena movie screening at Rose Marine Theater

Artes de La Rosa Cultural Center for the Arts is hosting a free screening of the 1997 “Selena” movie, along with karaoke.

Fans are encouraged to dress in their favorite Selena shirt or outfits for the event. While the event is free, people need to register online to save their seat for the movie screening.

Karaoke will kick off the event from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by the movie screening immediately after.

Selena Day at Legacy Hall

The first Austin-founded Selena tribute band, Bidi Bidi Banda, is coming to Plano this weekend to celebrate the Tejano singer.

Bidi Bidi Banda will be on hand singing Selena’s biggest hits at Legacy Hall. The venue houses nearly 20 eateries and a handful of bars, so Selena fans will have plenty to enjoy beyond the live show.

Selena Day at AT&T Discovery District

A huge celebration of Selena, complete with low riders and live performances, will take place in Dallas this weekend.

Car group Dallas Lowriders will be on-site with their caravan of impressive cars. There will also be a screening of the “Selena” movie on the AT&T Discovery District’s 104-foot media wall. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn furniture to watch the movie, or they can sit at the Jaxon Beer Garden patio to catch the film at 6 p.m.

After the movie, band Selena Forever will takeover for a tribute concert at the Jaxon Beer Garden stage from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. In addition, fans can enter into the Selena costume contest for a chance to win a $500 gift card to the Jaxon Beer Garden. The contest gets underway at 9:15 p.m., between Selena Forever’s concert intermission.

Rooftop Cinema Club screening of ‘Selena’

Downtown Fort Worth’s Rooftop Cinema Club is screening the “Selena” movie later this month.

The rooftop open-air cinema experience has food and drink vendors on-site, along with lawn games and plenty of seating.

Selena birthday celebration with over 30 vendors

ArtPark Trinity Groves and Happily Sip & Shop have partnered together for an all-star Selena Day celebration.

The Selena Day festival will feature over 30 local vendors, a paint class, Selena themed cocktails, dance instructor, music and a costume contest.

For those looking to stay at home to celebrate, there’s still plenty of ways to enjoy with Selena-related content.

The 1997 movie “Selena” is streaming on HBO Max and available to rent on Amazon and Apple TV for $3.99. The 2020 “Selena: The Series” show that chronicles the Tejano singer’s life is streaming on Netflix.
