Where to get free back-to-school haircuts in Madison County

It's almost time for children to return to school and Cut'n Up Barbershop and Berea Beauty Academy are offering free haircuts to help local students get ready for the first day of classes.

Cut'n Up Barbershop opened its shop in Richmond in January 2022; however, the owner, Brian Crutchfield, has been a professional barber for 11 years. He said that, in that time, he has been providing free haircuts for kids to start the school year.

Last year was the first time Crutchfield offered the service in Richmond, and he said his shop cut 60 heads of hair.

"I've always done that as a barber," he said. "And I do it because community service is important, and that's obviously a good way to give back is to offer a haircut or treatment for those who can't really afford to have it, especially with kids going back to school. I want to give kids the opportunity to get a fresh start and get to be ready for the new year."

His kindness inspired another local hair stylist, Tiph Montgomery, to help the community.

"I've wanted to get with the schools since the end of last school year when I opened my studio," she said. "When I saw the barbershop offering free cuts to families that need it, it just clicked. Of course, we all as a community in the hair industry should do what we can for families in need. I don't have much to offer, but I can offer my time, attention, and craft."

According to Judy Lake, co-owner of Berea Beauty Academy, giving free haircuts gives her students more experience while giving back to younger students around town.

"It just assists all of our students as a whole," she said. "Our students get experience toward being a cosmetologist and the public, with inflation being what it is, I know every dollar counts."

Cut'n Up Barbershop will be providing free haircuts on Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to about 3 p.m. Berea Beauty Academy will be providing them on both August 8 from 12 to 4 p.m. and August 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To schedule for a free haircut with Tiph, contact her via her professional page,Rainbowlocsby Tiph, or her regular Facebook page.
