Where do the Greater Gardner high school basketball teams sit in the state playoff race?
The MIAA released an updated batch of power rankings for the boys and girls basketball state tournaments on Friday morning.
These power rankings are not finalized and adjustments may be made as schools send their game results to the MIAA. This set of power rankings reflects scores which have been entered into ArbiterLive as of Friday, Feb. 3 at 4 a.m.
The biggest piece of news since we last checked in on the local teams’ standing in the power rankings two weeks ago is that both the Gardner High and Oakmont Regional boys basketball teams both captured their 10th win of the season during Week 8 thereby guaranteeing playoff berths for the Wildcats and Spartans.
The Monty Tech boys basketball team, winners of three in a row and four of its last five games before their game against Parker School last Friday, is also surging at the right time. Though it is unlikely the Bulldogs (8-6) will earn a top-32 seed for the Division 3 state tournament, they can earn a spot in a play-in game with a .500 record or better.
The good news is not solely limited to the region’s boys hoops teams either. The Monty Tech girls (5-9) recently won four games in a row to give themselves a fighting chance of reaching .500, while Gardner High (7-5), Oakmont (7-6) and Quabbin (7-6) were all hovering above .500 entering play last Friday.
