Here’s where Hope, Grand Valley rank on latest ‘Best Colleges’ list

A pair of local higher education institutions are among the best in the country, according to a new report.

The latest “Best Colleges” rankings from the U.S. News and World Report have been released, and include Grand Valley State University and Hope College.

Grand Valley State University ranked No. 236 out of 1,827 schools in National Universities — in the top 13 percent. Narrowed to public schools, GVSU ranked 129.

GVSU was the sixth-highest ranked Michigan school on the list, behind the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (21), Michigan State University (60), Michigan Technological University (151), University of Detroit Mercy (185) and Wayne State University (201).

Other Michigan school rankings included Central Michigan University at No. 260, Ferris State University and Western Michigan University tied for No. 304 and Eastern Michigan University in a tie for No. 376.

Hope College was included in the list for National Liberal Arts Colleges, ranked No. 100 in the country. It was third in Michigan, behind Hillsdale College (39) and Kalamazoo College (70) and ahead of Albion College (124) and Aquinas College (156).

Hope was also named one of the Best Value Schools among liberal arts colleges. The college was No. 91 on that list, the best of any Michigan liberal arts school.

Hope was also one of 54 schools — and just two in Michigan — listed on the Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects List, ranking No. 27.

U.S. News uses a variety of data points to rank colleges. Factors considered include graduation rate, first-year retention rate, peer assessment, faculty ratios, financial resources per student and more.
