Where and how to mail your federal tax return

It’s getting down to the wire to mail in your tax returns on time.

Your return must be postmarked by April 15, have the correct postage, and be addressed correctly to be considered on time by the IRS, according to the U.S. Postal System.

Make sure to weight your return to get the right postage. Most returns weigh more than one ounce, so you will need more than just a stamp. Your return will be sent back to you if you don’t have enough postage.

Put your return in a USPS blue collection box that has a pick-up time before the deadline. Some post offices will be open longer and offer late postmarking on Tax Day. Call ahead to find out.

There’s no single IRS address. The one you use depends on where you’re filing from and whether your return includes a payment. Here’s where to send yours, according to the IRS.
