Where can you find Newport's most expensive restaurant dishes? Think seafood and steak.

It's no secret that dining out nowadays is expensive, dining out in Newport possibly even more so. The city has built a legacy of catering to the well-to-do and the menus in restaurants throughout the city reflect that.

But that begs the question: What is the most expensive dish one can order in Newport? Well, to make a top 10 list, The Newport Daily News filtered restaurants on Yelp to those with three dollar signs or higher then searched for the most expensive item and most expensive main dish on each menu.

The top of the list is dominated by seafood platters and Japanese steak

If you’re looking for the most expensive menu item in the city, it would be hard to beat The Grille at Forty 1 North’s Supreme Tower, a $295 seafood tower made up of a dozen oysters, a dozen clams, a dozen shrimp, tuna tartare, a chilled whole lobster, crab and scallop crudo.

Several other restaurants in the city also have seafood platters, making them the most common, most expensive item on Newport restaurants’ menus. After Forty 1 North’s Supreme Tower, Midtown Oyster Bar’s The Leviathan claims the second-highest price tag at $260. It comes with 24 oysters, 24 littlenecks, 12 shrimp cocktail, four chilled half lobsters, salmon poke, smoked fish dip, shrimp ceviche, tuna tartare and scallop crudo.

The top 10 list is not all lobster tails and tuna tartare, however. Three of the most expensive dishes we could find in the city were steaks, two of which are made from A5 wagyu beef, the highest grade of Japanese beef available. Wagyu beef is sought after by foodies and steak enthusiasts because of how evenly marbled the fat in the cuts are, among other reasons.

22 Bowen sells a six-ounce A5 Wagyu Sirloin and an A5 Wagyu Ribeye, both of which go for $198. The steaks are served rare with a choice of one of nine sauces.

The only restaurant to make the top 10 list without a seafood platter or expensive steak entree was The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn with its $165 per person tasting menu, $260 with wine pairings. The six-course dinner, which offers options like foie gras terrine, lobster and venison, also comes with the option to add Chilean black truffle to each course for $40 per course.

Expensive dish honorable mentions

The Mooring sells a $78 seafood tower, called the Grand Tower, and a Two Pound baked stuffed lobster with scallops and shrimp for $75, neither of which made the list, but they were not far off. Scales and Shells’ Lobster Fra Diavlo, a two-person meal made with lobster, littlenecks, mussels and calamari on a bed of linguini in a house-made roberto sauce, also nearly made the list for its $73 price tag.
