Where are they now? Checking in on Newport County college basketball players

They got their start at Newport County schools and have advanced to the collegiate ranks, some competing at the highest level.

They're in the Big East, the Atlantic Coast and America East conferences. They're in Division I and Division III. There are transfers at new schools and players who have been with their programs from the start.

Some are standouts and have a place in the starting lineup, while others come off the bench to provide minutes when needed. But they're all looking to help their respective teams earn a berth in the NCAA tournament come March.

Here’s a look at the locals playing college basketball for the 2021-22 season.

Cole Swider, Syracuse

The Portsmouth resident spent his first three seasons at Villanova after graduating from St. Andrew’s School in Barrington. In April, the 6-foot-9 forward announced he was transferring to Syracuse to close out his career. Through 10 games, all starts, Swider is averaging 12.2 points and a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game.
