Coming off a one-point loss to Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl, Ohio State is already projected as one of the top teams in college football heading into the 2023 season.

ESPN's Bill Connelly has the Buckeyes ranked as the second-best team in the country in his preseason college football SP+ rankings behind the Bulldogs.

With an overall rating of 30.0 — one of two teams in college football with a 30-point rating or higher — Connelly ranks Ohio State as the No. 1 offense and the No. 10 defense in college football.

Michigan sits behind Ohio State at No. 3 with the No. 8 offense and the No. 4 defense in the country.

With Penn State coming in at No. 5, the Big Ten has three teams in the top five of Connelly's SP+ rankings, while the next conference team to show up is Wisconsin at No. 25. The Big Ten leads the nation in average returning production for the 2023 season.

The SP+ rankings take into account returning production, recent recruiting and recent history.
