"Outer Banks," the hit Netflix show about a group of adventurous teenagers hunting for treasure, is back for season 3. The series based in the Outer Banks of North Carolina released its latest installment on Feb. 23.

If you're like us, watching the show immediately makes you want to go on vacation to the beach (minus the bad guys). So, you may be wondering where the gorgeous scenes from "Outer Banks" are actually filmed.

Well, the answer might not be what you think.

Where is 'Outer Banks' filmed?

Surely "Outer Banks" is filmed in the location that inspired its name, the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Right?

Wrong. The series primarily films around Charleston, South Carolina. Prior to season 1, Netflix passed on filming in North Carolina due to House Bill 2, a bill with anti-LGBTQ language.

"Netflix didn’t want us to shoot in North Carolina for various reasons, even though that was our first choice because (co-creator Jonas Pate) lives in Wilmington," show co-creator Josh Pate said to Garden & Gun in 2022. "But the locations around Charleston are so incredible that I think the show ended up in a better place for it."

"Outer Banks" also filmed scenes in Barbados in seasons 2 and 3.

Will there be a season 4 of 'Outer Banks'?

According to Teen Vogue, the drama received an early renewal for season 4 on Feb. 18. Netflix announced the news at a special Poguelandia event in Huntington Beach, California. A release date for season 4 has yet to be announced.
