If, like us, you can't wait to get your true-crime-loving-teeth into The Thing About Pam, you're probably counting down the days, hours and minutes until its UK release. You might (read: definitely) also be wondering what the six-part series is actually about, including who the real life people behind the drama are.

With the trailer for the upcoming show having just been released, we're more excited than ever to watch the programme, and have found ourselves heading to Google to learn about who Pam Hupp is, and more importantly, where she is now. Thankfully, for you lucky lot, we've now done all that hard work for you, so if you've also got a few burning questions about Pam Hupp, here's everything you need to know.

Who is Pam Hupp?

In 2011, Pam Hupp drove her friend Betsy Faria home from chemotherapy – later that night, Betsy was found dead, with more than 50 stab wounds. Just four days before her murder, Betsy Faria had been convinced by Hupp to make her the sole beneficiary of her life insurance policy, totalling $150,000.

Although Hupp was the last person to see Betsy Faria alive, her husband Russel Faria was arrested on suspicion of her murder, on the basis that the pair's home appeared to have been the scene of a domestic struggle, with blood smeared around the house. Not only that, but Hupp pointed the finger at Faria, telling authorities that he had a bad temper. She even encouraged them to check his laptop, where they found a note supposedly written by Betsy Faria that said she was scared her husband would kill her.

Despite his numerous alibis – which included CCTV footage and a receipt from a trip to the cinema – Faria was found guilty of first-degree murder by a jury in 2013. But two years later, Faria appealed the verdict and was subsequently acquitted by a judge.

Where is Pam Hupp now?

One year after Faria's acquittal, Hupp was charged with the murder of Louis Gumpenberger, whom she had set up to look like an intruder in a scheme she'd devised to frame Faria as a violent person. At the time, Hupp told the authorities that Gumpenberger had been hired on behalf of Faria to threaten her life, but in 2019 she entered a 'best-interest plea' – meaning she did not plead guilty but acknowledged that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict her. Because of this, she avoided the death penalty but was sentenced to life in prison. She's currently serving her time in the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri.

Following her conviction, prosecutors reopened Betsy Faria's case, later charging Hupp with her murder in July 2021. "I would just like to say that this was a long time coming," Russell Faria said of Hupp's charge. “I am eagerly awaiting for this to go to trial and I am doing what I can to assist."

Hupp pleaded 'not guilty' to murdering her friend and the trial is ongoing – prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. "I do not take lightly the decision to pursue the death penalty," Lincoln County Prosecutor Mike Wood said at a press conference. "But this case stands alone in its heinousness and depravity, such that it shocks the conscience."

The Thing About Pam premiered on 8 March on NBC, and will hopefully be available to stream in the UK soon.
