Where do you park at the Super Bowl? You’ll need to know the rules

Miami is busy preparing for Super Bowl 54 — and football fans are, too.

A lot will be happening in the Magic City the week leading up to the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb 2. There will be events, hordes of tourists, and traffic. There’s also a list of things you need to buy if you’re planning to attend the Super Bowl, including parking.

Yes, parking.

Don’t assume it’s included in your $5,000 Super Bowl ticket — it’s not.

Deciding which parking permit to buy might be confusing, and you probably have a lot of questions.

Here’s everything you need to know about parking at Super Bowl 54:

Your game ticket does not include parking

You need to buy a parking permit online at parksuperbowl.com if you’re driving to Hard Rock Stadium on game day.

Normally, fans can save up to $15 on parking by paying with SunPass at the stadium during all Miami Dolphins home games and other events, but the deal is not valid for Super Bowl 54, according to the NFL.

Instead, you’ll need to buy a pre-parking pass if you want to park at Hard Rock Stadium on Feb. 2.

So here’s how to do it:

There are two options on the website: Standard vehicle and oversized vehicle.

If you’re going in a car or SUV, click “standard.” If you’re planning to cruise into the lot in a minibus, limo, bus, luxury or sprinter van, click “oversized.” You’ll then be asked to narrow your selection.

Expect to pay $120 to $360 depending on what vehicle you have. It’s for general surface lot parking.

Here’s a breakdown:

Standard size cars or SUVs — $120

Limousines, luxury or sprinter vans — $240

Minibuses — $300

Buses — $360

Those prices include a service fee and sales tax. But compared to what you’ve spent on airfare, hotel and game tickets, it’s probably the cheapest Super Bowl purchase you’ll make.

Pro Tip: In case you don’t know, Miami traffic is the worst in the country. So do everyone a favor and carpool. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but the fewer cars on the road, the more sanity Miami drivers will have. Carpooling also means you get to split the cost of parking with your friends.

Pro Tip: If your bank account is running on empty, you can consider other transportation options like mass transit. Miami also has taxis, Uber and Lyft, but prices will probably get steep, especially if surge pricing happens (which it will).

How early can I park and how late can I stay?

All parking lots will open at 1 p.m. Feb. 2, Super Bowl Sunday, and close at 1 a.m. on Feb. 3, according to the NFL.

Overnight parking will not be allowed. Any vehicle found parked in the lots after 1 a.m. Feb. 3 will be towed and you will be charged.

No tailgating and no shuttles

Those who have tickets to the Super Bowl will be the only ones allowed to park at the stadium’s NFL-managed parking lots. You also won’t be able to tailgate in those NFL lots. It’s prohibited, according to the website.

“Fans may bring their own food and frosty beverages but may not have lit flames, take up more than one spot or erect tents,” NFL Vice President of Communications Brian McCarthy said in an email to the Miami Herald.

Translation: Leave the grill at home. If you have snacks, eat them in your parking space.

Fans who really want to party before the big game will have to buy one of the NFL’s ticket packages. The cheapest packages start at $4,591 and include a pregame party filled with NFL Alumni appearances, music and yes — tailgate games, food, drinks and photo ops.

Wear comfortable shoes because there will be no shuttles taking fans from the parking lots to the stadium for the game and back.

Parking permits have different rules

Staff will not scan any Super Bowl parking permit that is on a phone. This means you need to go old-school and print it.

Parking permits for standard-sized cars and SUVs will be sent to your email, along with directions on how to arrive to your lot or garage, shortly after you purchase the permit. Then you need to print it and give it to the parking assistant in your designated lot.

The rules are different for those who have an oversized vehicle.

Drivers going to the Super Bowl in a minibus, limo, bus, luxury or sprinter van will not get their parking permit immediately after purchasing it. Instead, a printed placard will be shipped through FedEx to the address you provide, and yes, shipping fees will apply, according to the website.

FedEx can’t deliver to P.O. Boxes, only physical addresses, the website states. If you don’t have a physical address, ship the permit to a trusted family member or friend who does.

Once the permit ships, you’ll receive an email with a tracking number. The first batch of permits shipped last Wednesday.

For questions relating to parking placard order shipments, email sbtransportinfo@gmail.com or call 866-715-7210.

I’m not driving to the Super Bowl after all. Can I get a refund?

No. All parking permit sales are final so make sure you double-check the event details, dates, times and your travel plans before buying one.

If you buy one and realize that you don’t need a parking permit after all, you can try to resell it at “face value,” according to the NFL.

The NFL says the permit can be transferred to another customer but there is a “strict anti-scalping policy,” which usually means you can’t stand around the stadium on game day, trying to sell it to a fan for a higher or lower cost.

Pro Tip: Every parking permit is for one vehicle only and can only be scanned once. So if you and your friends are going in two cars, you need to buy two permits. It also means you need to be careful if you’re buying it from someone else. You don’t want to get scammed.

With the Super Bowl coming to Miami, here’s how to avoid ticket scams

Is there handicapped parking?

Yes, but it’s only in select lots. When you visit the parking website, click on “Standard vehicle.” You will then have an option to select Accessible Parking (ADA Placard required) for standard-sized cars or SUVs. The ADA permits are the same price as others.

Those who purchase an ADA parking permit will later be contacted by the NFL’s Mobility Assistance Team to see what their needs will be once parked. Team members will be at the stadium and in select lots during the Super Bowl to help disabled people get from their cars to their seats, according to the NFL.

Here’s what else you need to know:

Print the parking permit and take it with you on game day. You will need to show it to the attendant.

Your car or SUV must have a state issued ADA Placard or license plate.

The person with the ADA tag must be in the vehicle.

There are no ADA parking options for oversized vehicles (minibus, limo, bus, luxury or sprinter van)

Anyone with ADA-related questions can email superbowlada@gmail.com

I don’t live in the U.S. How can I purchase a parking permit?

International fans who are flying to Miami and driving to the Super Bowl can buy their permits on the website. Those who need help in placing the order can call 866-715-7210.

Other things to know

There is a maximum amount of parking permits that can be purchased per customer. On Friday, the website gave the option to buy up to four standard or oversized permits at a time. Only one ADA parking permit is allowed to be bought at a time.

If some of your party is planning to go in an SUV while others are going in a minibus, you need to make two separate permit orders. The website will not allow you to put a standard permit and an oversized permit in your cart at the same time.

RV parking is not available for purchase. RV drivers should visit www.miasbliv.com for more information.

All parking permit orders will include directions to the parking location. Drivers should turn off their GPS once at the stadium as workers will be there to direct traffic, organizers say.

Anyone with questions about parking or their order can call 866-715-7210. Customer service representatives are available around the clock, including holidays, according to the website. You can also email superbowl@parkmobileglobal.com
