Where road work is happening in Indianapolis in December -- and how to detour

While winter means lighter months for construction, some major projects will keep plugging away this December.

This means new closures related to Indiana Department of Transportation's North Split reconstruction project, but also the lifting of some other closures.

Two notable closures are ending on Dec. 3: Ohio Street under the interstate, and the intersection of Keystone Avenue and 38th Street, which had been closed since Nov. 29 for utility work in preparation for IndyGo's incoming Purple Line.

Here's what to expect in December:

Vermont Street

Where: Under Interstate 65/70

When: Through Dec. 15.

Why: Bridge demolition for the North Split project.

Detour: Eastbound traffic will use New York Street; westbound, use Michigan Street. See a map here.

West Market Street

Where: The westbound lane from Monument Circle to Illinois Street and the right-most northbound lane of Illinois where it meets Market.

When: Through the end of the year.

Why: To rebuild the street with an improved roadway and sidewalk paver system, ADA-compliant ramps and crosswalks, streetscaping and more parking. This is the same work being done to East Market Street between Alabama and Delaware streets, which is still closed through the end of the year.

Detour: Westbound Market Street traffic can reach Illinois Street using Meridian and Washington streets.

East Market Street

Where: Under Interstate 65/70.

Detour: From Beecher Street, take East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive instead. From East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive, head south on Shelby Street to connect to East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive. Local traffic will still be allowed through. See a map here.

East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive

Where: From Ritter to Arlington avenues.

When: Through Dec. 31.

Why: Sewer rehabilitation work as part of the Pleasant Run Tunnel segment of Citizen Energy Group's DigIndy project.

Detour: Use cross streets East Michigan Street or East St. Clair Street. See a map here.

Read: After 15 years and $2B, DigIndy is almost done. It's probably not big enough.

Bethel Avenue

Where: From Nolan Avenue to just east of Madeira Street.

When: Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, through mid-December.

Why: A water main project of Citizens Energy Group. The project may require some temporary water service disruptions, of which residents will be notified of through door tags two days in advance.

Detour: If heading east on Bethel Avenue, take Perkins Avenue south to Raymond Street. If heading west on Raymond Street, take Perkins Avenue to Bethel Avenue. See a map here.

X-shaped intersection of Southeastern and English avenues

Where: The intersection of Rural Street, Southeastern Avenue and English Avenue; Rural Street from this intersection to Washington Street will be closed during construction except to local traffic. English Avenue between Oxford and Gray streets will be only accessible to westbound local traffic.
