Where to see Academy Awards’ film nominees for free

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Some films that are up for Academy Awards have never been seen in Kansas, so a Wichita librarian decided to change that. Now, 38 years later, Wichita still benefits from her efforts.

Starting next week, the Wichita Public Library will present the 38th Academy Award Short Film Festival. It includes each short film nominated in the categories of live-action, animation, and documentary.

From March 2 through March 9, the public is invited to several free screenings of the 15 short films.

Country award-winning artist Jelly Roll will perform at Wichita’s Intrust Bank Arena

“This is honestly one of my most favorite programs we do at the library, so I always get really excited talking about this,” Sean Jones, Wichita Public Library communications specialist, said. “Back in 1986, Wichita Public Library had a librarian who wanted Wichitans to view the nominated short films in the live action, animation and documentary categories. At that time, people who lived in New York and Los Angeles were typically the only people who got to see these nominated short films.”

Jones said the librarian got all the films together and began the film festival, and the library continues making her vision a reality.

A short film must be less than 40 minutes long. To see the title, a description and the length of each of the nominated films, click here.

  • The five films in the animation category add up to 59 minutes.

  • The five films in the live-action category add up to 2 hours and 13 minutes.

  • The five films in the documentary category add up to 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Viewer discretion is advised because some films may not be suitable for all audiences. They are not rated like feature films are.
