Where we stand after two months of the 2022 racing season at Casino Speedway
Based on the original schedule for the 68th season of racing at Casino Speedway, Sunday night's program was supposed to be the midway point on the event schedule before the track championships racing program on Sept. 4.
Instead, Sunday's program was only the fifth out of nine scheduled events in May and June. The season opener was delayed after two rain outs. Two other programs in June were canceled, one because of rain and the other because of heat.
There is a regularly scheduled break next Sunday for the Fourth of July holiday, followed by nine consecutive Sunday programs concluding with the track championships.
Here's some highlights so far with the 2022 season:
Sunday's Feature Winners
Six drivers won features on Sunday including Aberdeen's Chad Becker, who won his third late model feature of the season. Becker is the three-time defending track champion in the class.
Adam Brotherton of Huron (Midwest modifieds) and Bodie Croninger of Watertown (limited late models) each won their second features of the season and were joined by other feature winners Tim Thomas of West Fargo, N.D. (modifieds); Kyle Dykhoff of Starbuck, Minn. (street stocks) and Jeff Asche of Willmar, Minn. (hornets).
Other Feature Winners
Tyler Peterson of Horace (N.D.) has three feature wins so far this season in the modified division. Two-time winners include Mike Nichols of Watertown (Midwest modifieds), Jason Marko of Watertown (street stocks), Adam VanDerostyne of Canby, Minn. (hornets) and Payton Asche of Granite Falls, Minn. (hornets).
The list of 2022 feature winners also included Josh Skorczewski of Aberdeen and Scott Ward of Watertown, late models; Dale Ames of Huron, modifieds; Scott Hansen of Garden City, Midwest modifieds; Maria Broksieck of Goodwin and Andy Rossow of Florence, street stocks; and Trajan Schmidt and Tony Croninger of Watertown, limited late models.
Setting the pace in season points
As mentioned above, there's still plenty of time for drivers to make their moves in the season points races.
Becker holds a 39-point advantage of Blake Swenson of Watertown in the late model division.
Peterson, who won modified track titles in 2019 and 2020, has a 21-point lead over Ames in the modified division.
Nichols is seeking a third-straight season points title in the Midwest modifieds division and has a six-point lead over Brotherton.
Broksieck, who won street stock titles in 2018 and 2020, currently leads Marko by 10 points in the division.
Schmidt leads Todd Stark of Watertown by 10 points in the limited late models division and defending track champion VanDeroystyne has a 19-point advantage of Bradley Rossow of Florence in the hornets division.
Looking ahead on the schedule
The next three Sundays of scheduled racing will include specials. The events kick off on Sunday, July 10 with the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association-Lake Model Challenge Series Special at 6 p.m.
The stretch will also include the 13th United States Modified Touring Series Special at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 17 and the Rebel Midwest Modified Tour-Steffes Street Stock Tour Special at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 24.
