It started with toilet paper. With all of the uncertainty surrounding the spread of COVID-19 and its subsequent lockdowns, people began buying the bathroom staple en masse at unprecedented rates, causing shortages not only on store shelves, but online. It was shortly followed by other home essentials, including hand sanitizer, paper towels, cleaning wipes, and thermometers. Water filters are also becoming a growing list of items that are becoming harder to find, as pitchers and faucet filters from Brita, Pur, and other top brands are selling out quickly.

Essentially eliminating the need for bottled H2O (another hot seller), these handy little devices work by pushing tap water through a filtered screen that work to soak up everything from mercury, chlorine, copper, zinc, calcium, and even lead. Lest you decide you want one when it’s too late, we’ve taken the liberty of tracking down the filters that are still left standing.

While the best water filter we've ever tested, the Brita Everyday, was already out of stock at most retailers, we were able to track down the next best thing in the Brita Grand, which filtered water the fastest in our test and is still up for grabs at Bed Bath & Beyond and Target.

Brita also trumped the Pur in our test for water taste, filter lifespan, filter replacement cost and pitcher options, though Pur came out on top when it came to water contamination removal.
