Where do you vote and who's on the ballot in Staunton and Waynesboro?

Staunton only has two local offices on the ballot this year. There is a special election for one year to City Council that is filling an unexpired term and soil and water conservation director. In Waynesboro the only local office is soil and water conservation director. Both cities will also be voting for State Senate and House of Delegates.

The easy way to determine where you vote on Election Day in either city is on the Virginia Department of Elections website. On that site there is a section — vote.elections.virginia.gov — that allows you to register to vote, check your registration status, apply to vote by absentee mail and, most importantly for this story, find your polling location.

In order to find your polling place you'll need to enter your name, date of birth, last four digits of your social security number, and the city where you live. You'll also have to check a box certifying that the information you entered is your own and not someone else's.

The information you receive back will let you check to make sure your full name and address is correct on your registration status. It will tell you the name and address where you vote. It will tell you the local ward in which you reside, as well as the state senate and house districts that cover where you live.

While the general election isn't until Nov. 7, in-person, early voting in Virginia already started and ends Saturday, Nov. 4. Voters do not need a reason to vote early.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 16, although voters may register after this date through Election Day and vote using a provisional ballot. The deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you is Oct. 27.
