The 2022 FIFA World Cup final is Sunday.

Both Argentina and France are looking to win the World Cup for the third time. It would leave the winning team in outright fourth place on the all-time list, behind Brazil (five), Germany and Italy (both four). Three of Germany’s titles were won by West Germany (1954, 1974 and 1990).

A victory for France would rubber-stamp its status as the dominant national team of this generation, with its previous titles coming in 1998 and 2018. Argentina won its titles in 1978 and 1986. Both of the countries won their first World Cup title when hosting the tournament.

United States' head coach Gregg Berhalter watches his team take on Costa Rica in the first half in their World Cup qualifier at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio on October 13, 2021.
United States' head coach Gregg Berhalter watches his team take on Costa Rica in the first half in their World Cup qualifier at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio on October 13, 2021.

What were Ohio's connections to the World Cup?

The coach of the United States men, Gregg Berhalter, took that job after a run with the Crew in which he led the team to the playoffs four times (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018). They reached the MLS Cup in 2015 but lost at home 2–1 to the Portland Timbers. Overall, Berhalter won 74 games, lost 70 and tied 49 with the Black and Gold.

He led the United States to the knockout round, where the Americans lost to the Netherlands 3-1, and then was heavily criticized for divulging that the team nearly sent Gio Reyna home for a lack of hustle during training when it might have been better to keep that information in house.

The biggest snub when it comes to the U.S. World Cup roster was goalie Zack Steffen. He failed to make the team despite the fact that he was battling Arsenal's Matt Turner for the starting spot during World Cup qualifying and the fact that Steffen and Berhalter worked together with the Crew from 2016 to 2018.

And on one of the youngest of the 32 teams by average age, 29-year-old right back and former Akron player DeAndre Yedlin was the United States' one holdover from the 2014 World Cup. He appeared in two matches at this year's tournament, totaling 33 minutes of play.

During his college career, he scored his lone goal on September 28, 2011, in a home game against Ohio State that the Zips won 3-1. Yedlin also finished with 12 assists during his two seasons with Akron.
