STAUNTON — Get ready for a drop in temperatures come Monday, along with the possibility of rain, snow, sleet and frost.

Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible, the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures dropped to 33 degrees Sunday night. Monday saw a mix of rain, mixed with snow in the early hours that turned to snow and sleet in the afternoon.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the northern and central Blue Ridge mountains starting at 5 a.m.

The winter weather advisory continues for the northern and central Blue Ridge mountains until 8 p.m. Monday. Frost and freeze conditions may impact the area again late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the NWS said.

There was a frost advisory overnight Sunday for the area.

Expect rain, snow and sleet before 1 p.m. Monday, then rain, possibly mixed with snow. There will be patchy fog between 11 a.m. and noon.

Temperatures should be in the 60s by Wednesday.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, April and May will be warmer than normal, with rainfall near normal in the north and below normal in the south. Summer will be hotter and slightly drier than normal, with the hottest periods in mid-June and early to mid-July, from late July into early August and in late Augusta, the Almanac said.

April, according to the Almanac, should have an average temperature of 57 with showers at the beginning and end of the month. May should see an average of 64 degrees with similar shower predictions as April.

According to NWS Meteorologist Austin Mansfield, snow this late in April isn't a common occurrence, but it does happen. He said we typically see snow outside the normal time frame once or twice a year.

Snow should taper off as the day continues with inch counts in the western portion of the county reaching between 3 to 4 inches, Mansfield said. Snow showers could continue longer along higher elevations.

Tuesday morning should have lower temps in the 20s, which could potentially refreeze some of the slush from Monday.

Freeze watch and warning for the area

Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro will be under a freeze warning starting at midnight Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Expect sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 expected.

There's a freeze watch with temperatures as low as 29 possible for the area late Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
