Mount Pleasant’s Old Village is a 37-block area with a mix of historic homes, large and small that despite the sprawl that surrounds it, sits quaintly beside Charleston Harbor.

The oldest still existing house was built in 1759, according to the town.

The homes that grew up around it include Victorian wood frame houses, large antebellum homes, traditional Colonial Revival brick houses among newer homes, mostly huge, with waterfront views.

And then there is The Tree House at 968 Pitt Street, located along the marsh. It’s for sale for $4,995,000. The house gets its name from the 28 moss-draped live oaks and other mature trees on half an acre.

“Ultimate privacy,” the listing says.

It was designed by Charleston architect Reggie Gibson and, well, whimsical elegance might be the best descriptor.

The Wall Street Journal called it quirky.

The four-bedroom, three-bath house has a fuschia modern staircase, a tunnel for an entrance and vivid colors throughout. The windows on one side are at varying heights and size, creating a playful look. And speaking of walls, they flair out. And how about the glass garage doors that open to porches overlooking hundreds of acres of marsh.

The house “lives in perfect harmony with the natural landscape,” listing agent Robertson Allen of The Cassina Group wrote. “The house is tucked under the trees and most windows and doors open onto deep porches to maximize natural air cooling.”

The paint on the cabinetry is from British paint and wallpaper maker Farrow & Ball, which produces historic color palettes and is known for unusual names of products. The Tree House appropriately has green cabinets called Calke Green, a color found in Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, England.

The outdoors can also be accessed from a formal sitting area, which also leads into the formal dining room. Not to be outdone, the primary bedroom suite has lots of windows and another glass garage door that leads to a private porch.

There is a guest wing with holly/teak floors — think boats — and here you see the sloping walls. There’s also an office.

The three main floor bedrooms have vaulted ceilings and French doors to a screened porch overlooking the marsh and creek. Two full bathrooms connect by a central washroom with a triple sink vanity and the current owners have a rocking horse in there.
