BOYNE CITY – The Mackinaw City cross country team saw a fourth-place finisher at the Boyne City Co-Ed Relays on Tuesday.

Medaling for the Comets was the team of Cooper Whipkey, Noah Valot and Larissa Huffman, who clocked a 40:46 time to finish fourth overall. The Comets (30 points) also finished third as a team in the meet.

In the relays, held at Boyne Mountain, runners ran two mile-and-a-half legs for a total of three miles.

Kyle Valot (10:22) took fourth in the middle school boys race.

For Inland Lakes (32), which finished fourth, the team of Luci Bunker and Logan McMullen took 28th with a 43:43 time, while Lannah Engler and Quintin Sprecker were 29th at 44:12. Other I-L teams included Hannah Hinman and a Mackinaw City runner (49th, 49:34), Lauren Fenstermaker and Remi Bollinger (39th, 50:16), Emma Milbourne and a Mackinaw City runner (45th, 52:03), and Ashley Murray and a Mackinaw City runner (48th, 54:24).

The Harbor Springs team of Cal Benjamin and Grace Thorpe earned first with a 36:30 time. North Trails (six points) won the meet as a team.

“We were pleased with this event,” said Inland Lakes coach Sarah Furman. “It was a 1.5-mile loop that each relay member ran twice, for a total distance of six miles. Our top three teams scored and because we had extra girls and Mackinaw City had extra boys, we put our extras together. In a strange way, we were part of the third-place team score as well as our own fourth-place team score. I guess this is the beauty that is high school cross country.

“It was also nice to give our kids a chance to get a great interval workout in.”

Bulldogs running in the middle school race included Elizabeth Furman (sixth, 10:20), Zander Robinson (15th, 10:52), Josephine Furman (20th, 11:01), Maggie Newman (25th, 11:23), Lance Biesel (31st, 11:57), Miley O’Boyle (62nd, 14:31) and Jackson Fayssoux (64th, 14:34).

Inland Lakes will host the Bulldog Invitational on Monday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m.
