Whips roll in opener

Dec. 17—CENTRAL VILLAGE It was quite a way to open the season for the Windham boys basketball team.

Travis Mangual, Jr. scored 25 points with six rebounds and seven steals and Zachary Robinson-Smey ( 13 points, 8 rebounds) made three 3- pointers Thursday night as Windham rolled past Plainfield, 69-33, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference inter- division game.

Tyler Mangual added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and six steals and Tahj Jones had eight points, three assists and three steals for the Whips, who used a 27-7 second- quarter surge to open up a commanding 44-14 halftime lead.

In other games ... Nate Cordner scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the first half and also had 11 rebounds in lifting Coventry to a 52-32 non-conference victory over Norwich Tech.

Aidan Jeamel added 14 points for the Patriots (1-0), who led 30-15 at halftime.

Junior Troy Miller scored 20 points and RHAM took a 34-21 lead into the halftime break and opened the season with a 65-54 Central Connecticut Conference East Division victory at East Hartford.

Roan Trzaskos added 19 points for the Raptors.

Michael Monroe scored 12 of his 14 points from distance and Elijah Lee added 12 points and eight rebounds as Parish Hill fell to Comp Sci, 51-37 in a Capital Region Athletic League game in Chaplin.

The Pirates faced Putnam on Friday night in the opening round of the Clipper Holiday Classic.

Noah Cordone had 20 points for E.O. Smith in a 89- 51 CCC inter- division loss to Lewis Mills in its season opener in Burlington.

Cam Mazzerolle added 11 points and Owen Sgro eight for the Panthers.

Connor McAtee made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 36 points for the Spartans (1-0).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sarah West scored 24 points and RHAM made 11 3-pointers in a 54-41 non- conference victory over Coventry in Hebron.

Taryn Brysgel (9 points) scored all of her points from behind the arc, Maddie Evans added eight points and Maddie Graves six points as the Raptors ( 2- 0) pulled away in the fourth quarter after their lead was cut down to five points.
