Whips win Whippet Duals

Jan. 2—WILLIMANTIC — Windham won its own Duals Invitational with a 58- 19 victory over Guilford in the championship match of the wrestling invite Friday at Callaghan Gymnasium.

Despard Delmazio (113 pounds), Nick Valliere ( 138), Ariel Cortez-Roque ( 145), Aaron Palacios- Mendoza ( 152), Emmanauel Sanchez ( 160), Asael Garcia- Rodriguez ( 182), Malachi Fowler ( 195) and Yael Garcia-Rodriguez ( 220) all won by pinfall for the Whips, who defeated E.O. Smith ( 72- 12), Bacon Academy ( 72- 12) and Rockville ( 6318) to win Pool B.

Guilford took Pool A with victories over Fitch (53-25), Waterford (54-30) and East Lyme/ Norwich Tech (51-29).

E. O. Smith fell to Waterford in the fifth- place match, 48- 24.

In other matches... RHAM won three matches in pool play before falling to host Killingly in the championship match of the Killingly New Year's Duals.

The Raptors defeated Suffield/ Windsor Locks (70-12), Plainville (60-22) and Shepherd's Hill, Mass. (52-29) in Pool B.

RHAM recorded six pins in the win over Shepherd's Hill with Kyle Currier ( 126) recording the fastest fall in 15 seconds.

Michael Guerriero (120) won via pin in 21 seconds while Gavin Plourde ( 132), Jeremy Devine ( 150), Boone Swanson (170) and Thiago Delacruz (285) also winning by pin.

Coventry, which defeated Cheshire, 42- 33 and lost to Killingly (78-6) and Gilbert in Pool A — fell to Plainvlle ( 51- 24) in the third- place match.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Charlotte Jordan made her seventh and final 3- pointer with 45 seconds remaining and made two key free throws for the final margin of victory as Coventry rallied for a 40-37 non-conference victory Friday over Amistad Academy.

The Patriots ( 5- 3) took their first lead of the game — 35-34 — with just over a minute to play. Following a turnover, the Wolves (1-7) were fouled on a lay- up and hit the ensuing free throw to take a 37- 35 lead.

Jordan ( 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals) knocked down her final 3- pointer and then helped seal the win with her two foul shots.

Taylor Pankowski added 12 points, three assists and four steals, Phoebe Carpenter had six points, 13 rebounds and two blocks, Kassidy LaTour added eight points, five rebounds and two blocks and Juliana Haynes finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-3).

Maddie Hughes had 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for E.O. Smith, which dropped a 59- 47 non-conference decision to defending Class MM state champion Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden.

Lilli Clark added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers (5-1).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Kevin Boticello led three players in double figures with 19 points to lead Lyman Memorial past Westbrook, 62-44, in a nonleague game in Lebanon.

Jaiden Lopez added 17 points and Jordan Chandler scored 11 for the Bulldogs (4-2).

Windham High senior Travis Mangual, Jr. was named the Connecticut Sun/ Eastern Connecticut Conference Player of the Week.

Mangual averaged 30 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5 steals, 3.5 assists and a block in two games last week as Windham defeated Windham Tech, 95-60, while falling to Conard, 56-52.

The Whips host East Lyme on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
