Whiskey Road reopens after gas line rupture repaired

Jan. 27—Homes and a shopping center along Whiskey Road were given the all-clear Thursday evening around 7:30 p.m. after a natural gas line was ruptured.

The city of Aiken around 5:30 p.m. said an area within a half-mile radius of the leak, near Colony Parkway and Applebee's, would be evacuated until further notice.

A portion of Whiskey Road was shut down, as were surrounding streets. Public Safety officers could be seen in the area diverting traffic, which snarled even on back roads.

The city initially predicted it would take two to three hours to stop or repair the leak, which was caused by utility work.

By 6 p.m., Dominion Energy had already pinched one end of the line , according to City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh.
