White & Case Continues Australia Expansion With M&A Partner in Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia

White & Case has hired mergers and acquisitions partner Nirangjan Nagarajah in Melbourne from Australian firm Gilbert + Tobin.

Nirangjan’s practice focuses on listed company takeovers and schemes of arrangement. Last year, he advised Australia-listed cleaning and catering contractor Spotless Group Holdings Ltd. on a $974 million takeover bid by Sydney-based engineering and infrastructure management company Downer EDI Ltd.

Nirangjan joined Gilbert + Tobin in 2011 and made partner in 2016. Previously, he practiced at the legacy Australian firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques and left a year before its merger with Chinese firm King & Wood. Nirangjan also worked at the Australian Takeovers Panel and the corporate finance division of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

White & Case has been expanding in Australia since raiding Herbert Smith Freehills in 2016 to launch offices in Melbourne and Sydney. More recently, White & Case recruited Sydney-based litigation partner Brad Strahorn, also from Herbert Smith Freehills, in September.

The New York-based firm has about 60 lawyers in Australia, including 16 partners.
