White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday will deliver the administration’s first daily press briefing of this high-stakes election year.

President Biden offered an upbeat message about the nation and his own performance in office in a pre-recorded New Year’s Eve interview with Ryan Seacrest, pointing out the strong economy and recovery from the pandemic.

But Biden’s campaign focus on economic policy hasn’t lifted dismal poll numbers, which have shown declines among several key demographic groups, including young people and Hispanic voters.

This weekend the president will appear at a campaign event in the historically symbolic Philadelphia suburb of Valley Forge to mark the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots. Biden is expected to use the opportunity to stress another core theme in his reelection bid, casting himself as a defender of freedom against what his campaign presents as former President Trump’s threat to democracy.

The briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
