The “Western White House,” a neoclassical Georgian Colonial in the San Francisco Bay Area, is back on the market, this time carrying a price tag of $38.9 million after recent major renovations.

Real estate investor Mehrsad Elie, who bought the home last year for $15 million, remodeled all nine full bathrooms, opened up the kitchen by combining four rooms into one large one, installed new hardwood floors and added a state-of-the-art movie theater, according to a representative for Compass, which holds the listing.

All told, the renovations cost about $6 million, according to Compass. The work adhered to the original architectural details.

The estate sits at 401 El Cerrito Ave., in the exclusive San Mateo County community of Hillsborough, California. Alex Buljan of Compass is the listing agent.

The palatial 24,350-square-foot, 11-bedroom residence was designed by Julia Morgan, the first female licensed architect in California. Morgan gained notoriety after designing Hearst Castle. On commission by the Hearst family, She designed the White House replica known for its tall columns, residential wings, Palladian windows and circular driveway.

Built in 1915, the four-level house was once owned by George Hearst, the oldest son of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst. In 1930, George Hearst brought in Morgan after the residence was badly damaged by fire.

The property sprawls across nearly 3 acres of manicured grounds and features a wine cellar, movie theater, gym and a library inspired by the Oval Office of the nation’s Capitol building in Washington, D.C.,

The home allows lots of sunlight to come in and has soaring ceilings throughout.

The upper-level contains five bedroom suites, including a spacious primary one with two bathrooms, expansive dressing rooms and a private executive office, and a sixth bedroom.

There are lower-level staff quarters, along with a fitness room, a family room, an elegant lounge and wine cellar, two more bedrooms, a hallway bathroom, powder room and laundry center .

Other amenities include a dumbwaiter, laundry chute, garbage chute, extensive solar panels, a rooftop deck, detached eight-car collector’s garage, a bank safe as large as a room and a lower level panic room safe.

Behind a gated entry among a forest of trees, the estate’s yard presents fountains, trees, hedgerows and an expansive mosaic motorcourt offering ample parking. Towering pillars open to sprawling lawns, a rose garden and ivy arches surrounding a massive statue-studded pool, bathhouse and gazebo.

Shailesh Mehta, former chairman and CEO of credit card issuer Providian Financial, bought the mansion in 1997 for about $6 million, according to Zillow, and did some heavy remodeling himself. Those renovations upgraded the pool and interior while adding master suites at either end of the house.

Elie, the seller whose family lives in a smaller house across the street, told the Wall Street Journal that the home was simply too large for them.
