A trio of local entertainers will be representing the South Shore when the 80th Golden Globe Awards nominations are handed out at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 on NBC.

Milton Academy graduate Jenny Slate is nominated for best animated movie for the endearing "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On," which debuted in theaters this past June. The HBO comedy "Hacks," co-created and written by Jen Statsky, who also grew up in Milton, lands a nod for best comedy series. And, fresh off her first Emmy win, Jennifer Coolidge, a Norwell native, nabs a supporting actress nomination for the second season of the HBO social satire "The White Lotus."

In “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” Slate, a Milton native, not only lends her distinct voice to the title character − a fearless, inch-tall gastropod with googly eyes and orange sneakers − but she also helped create him with her ex-husband, Dean Fleischer-Camp.  The movie is a feature adaptation of the popular stop-motion shorts and best-selling books Slate co-wrote with Fleischer-Camp, who directs in addition to playing the role of a camera-shy documentary filmmaker.

Norwell's Coolidge is a versatile character actress well-known for her cougarlicious role as "Stifler's mom" in the bawdy teen comedy "American Pie."  She won an Emmy Award in September for her part on the first season of "The White Lotus," which follows a group of affluent vacationers at a luxury resort. Coolidge reprises her part of Tanya McQuoid, an eccentric socialite, for the second season, which is set in Sicily.

Coolidge attended Norwell High School and delivered the commencement address to the Class of 2002, telling graduates: "When something you want more than anything else in life doesn't happen, remember that something more amazing might be waiting."

She is enjoying a career resurgence after her award-winning turn in “The White Lotus,” which won five Emmys, including outstanding limited or anthology series.  Upcoming for Coolidge are “Shotgun Wedding,” playing the mother-in-law-to-be of Jennifer Lopez in the romantic comedy, which will stream on Amazon Prime on Jan. 27; and two Netflix projects, the movie “We Have a Ghost” and the Ryan Murphy series “The Watcher,” which is available to stream. She’ll also reprise her role as Reese Witherspoon’s BFF, Paulette, in “Legally Blonde 3.”

Travis Helwig, left, and Milton native Jen Statsky pose with the award for outstanding writing for a comedy series for "Hacks" at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021, at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

Statsky, a 2004 graduate of Milton High School, co-created the Emmy-winning “Hacks” with Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs. The show explores the complicated relationship between a fading veteran comedian, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), and the struggling young writer (Hannah Einbinder) called upon to punch up her material.

Statsky attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She’s written for “The Good Place,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Broad City.”

The 2023 Golden Globes broadcast will mark the award show's return after scandal and boycott plunged the Hollywood Foreign Press Association into disarray and knocked it off television for a year. The Globes will be telecast January 10, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael.
