White Object Spotted Over Costa Rica As Pentagon Confirms Second Chinese Spy Balloon

A large white object was seen flying over Costa Rica on Thursday, February 2, as the Pentagon confirmed a second Chinese surveillance balloon was flying over Latin America in a statement on Friday.

“We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America. We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon,” chief Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder told Politico.

The director general of Costa Rica’s Civil Aviation, Fernando Naranjo Elizondo, told CNN that a balloon spotted above San Jose on Thursday was “not a balloon that originated from Costa Rica.”

The US Department of Defense (DoD) said fighter aircraft successfully brought down a high altitude surveillance balloon launched by and belonging to China off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday.

Video verified by Storyful showed the moment the balloon was shot down.

The DoD said the balloon was being used by China in an attempt to surveil strategic sites in the continental US.

Video posted by Twitter user @ecordeCR, which he said was captured in La Asuncion, in the district of Belen, Costa Rica, shows a round white object in the sky.
