White Pigeon grapplers win twice

The White Pigeon wrestling team won a pair of matches on Wednesday.

The wins came over Centreville 49-24 and Lawrence 78-6. Centreville also beat Lawrence on the evening, 69-6.

In the matchup with Centreville, the event started at 126 pounds. There, White Pigeon got on the board with a 16-13 victory by Drew Johnson over Braxton Harker. Centreville evened the match in the next bout as Brady Miller beat Gavin McGrady by a score of 9-6 at 132 pounds.

Centreville got another win at 138 pounds as well. This came by way of a 5-0 victory from Noah Brooks over Cole Jackson and put Centreville ahead 6-3 at the time.

White Pigeon and Centreville would flip-flop which team was ahead in the next two matches as well.

The Chiefs got a win from Evan Rudloff by pinfall at 144 over Lukas Brooks, this came at 2:45. Following that, Centreville got a victory from Chaseton Wyckoff by pinfall, he pinned Luke Hinkson in the second period and gave the Bulldogs a 12-9 edge.

That lead grew to 18-9 as Harrison Gregory pinned Dane Kochel at 157 pounds. White Pigeon would get a major decision win in the next bout, it came from Caleb Lane over Owen Taylor at 165 pounds by a score of 14-0.

Centreville’s Gavin Bunning won by void at 175 pounds. This put the Bulldogs ahead 24-13.

White Pigeon won the next four matches by pinfall.

Norberto Monroy won by pin over Colton Starks at 2:39 (190 pounds), Seth Miller won by pin at 1:15 over Wyatt Starks at 215 and Chaz Underwood won by pinfall over Peyton Balle at 285 at the 5:43 mark.

At 106 pounds, when the weights turned over, Mazzi Lambert won by pinfall over Rockne Hamilton in 31 seconds. This gave the Chiefs a 37-24 lead.

David Lane at 113 and Hunter Pant at 120 won by void, putting White Pigeon’s win at 49-24.

In White Pigeon’s matchup with Lawrence, several bouts were settled by void.

Lambert at 106, Ian Johnson at 120, Drew Johnson at 126, McGrady at 132, Jackson at 138, Rudloff at 144, Hinkson at 150, Kochel at 157, Lane at 165 and Monroy at 190 each won by void.

Miller earned a pinfall win at 215 at the 3:45 mark. Underwood won by pin at the 1:47 mark. Pant also won his match by pinfall at 113.

Centreville took care of business in beating Lawrence 69-6.

Hamilton at 106, Navia Nash at 120, Harker at 126, Miller at 132, Lukas Brooks at 144, Wyckoff at 150, Ariana Evans at 157 and Taylor at 165 each won.

Noah Brooks won by pinfall at 138 as did Peyton Balle.

Sturgis finishes 0-2

The Sturgis wrestling team hosted a pair of Wolverine Conference opponents in prep wrestling on Wednesday. The Trojans fell to Niles 58-18 and Edwardsburg 78-4.

Kaiden Waldron won both of his matches on the evening. Also earning a single win was Gage PeDue, Lola Barkby and Angel Alvarez.

Coach Brad Barkby said the Trojans had some learning bumps on the evening, but they know where the top of the mountain is.

“We’ve got a long ways to go but our kids are putting the work in,” he said. “I hope we can close that gap when districts hit.”

Mendon wrestles to split

The Mendon wrestling team finished with a 1-1 record on the mats Wednesday.

The Hornets beat Comstock 45-12 but dropped a close 42-37 decision to Hartford.

Grant Crotser won his match over Mason Garner by pinfall against Hartford. Jaxson Rose did the same at 165 pounds before James Lux won by decision at 190 pounds.

Noah Iobe also won by pinfall at 285, he beat Hunter Tipton.

Nate Vergauwen would win by major decision at 132, Andrew McClain won by pin at 138 and Lincoln Allen won by pinfall as well at 144.

In the matchup with Comstock, Mendon piled up a handful of victories in bouts.

Marcus Hodges won by pinfall at 150 pounds. Rose at 165 and Lux at 175 each won by pinfall as well. Iobe pinned Anton White in the first period for the Hornets.

Caleb King at 126 and Vergauwen at 132 both won by pin as well. Wyatt Steckbauer at 138 and Allen at 144 each won by decision in their bouts.
