Whitefield girls top Holy Cross in overtime in All 'A' Classic opener
For the second straight year, the Whitefield Academy girls basketball team is heading to the quarterfinals of the All “A” Classic state tournament.
The Wildcats outscored Holy Cross 9-2 in overtime to claim a 51-44 victory on Wednesday in the first round of the All “A” event at Eastern Kentucky University’s McBrayer Arena in Richmond.

Whitefield (17-5) advanced to face Owensboro Catholic (16-6) at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the quarterfinals. Owensboro Catholic beat Berea 39-33 in another first-round game Wednesday.
Amy Thompson scored 17 points to lead Whitefield. Allison Spieker scored 16 points, and Camryn Poole added 15 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Callie Wiegandt scored 16 points to lead Holy Cross (10-9), which shot 50% (16 of 32) but couldn’t overcome 22 turnovers

The Cougars led 22-16 at halftime before Whitefield rallied for a 40-32 lead on Thompson’s basket with 4:19 left in regulation. Holy Cross’ Sarah Duffy nailed a 3-pointer with 9 seconds left to tie the score at 42 and force overtime.
Thompson and Poole both scored four points in overtime to help Whitefield pull away.
