One day after state and federal authorities said they foiled a plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer greeted voters and called out President Trump for giving "safe harbor" to hate groups. (Oct. 9)
- Nice shirt!
- I'll be right in.
- All right.
GRETCHEN WHITMER: I think that the president has given safe harbor to hate organizations and terror-- domestic terror organizations. He has done it in the middle of debates.
Have you voted yet?
- I have already, actually.
GRETCHEN WHITMER: You have?
GRETCHEN WHITMER: OK, good.
We need leadership who steps up and takes it on. We need it coming out of the White House. And we need it at all of our state houses, as well.
Sally, have you voted yet?
- Yes, I have.
GRETCHEN WHITMER: You have! OK.
I think that it's a very real threat to our democracy. There's no question that these hate groups are domestic terrorists. And I think we need to call them that, frankly. I have asked specifically from this White House to bring the heat down. I have asked the Republican leaders in our state legislature to bring the heat down. I have asked for their help, and none of them have done a darn thing.
