Sponsored by Keep Carlsbad Beautiful and Carlsbad MainStreet, the theme of this year’s Electric Light Parade celebrates Dr. Seuss' Whoville and The Grinch.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was written by the famed children’s author in 1957. A television cartoon based on the story was adapted in 1966 and in 2000 actor Jim Carrey played the Grinch in a movie.

Mary Garwood, secretary for the Carlsbad MainStreet Board of Directors, said the theme should delight attendees to this year's parade and offers a chance to celebrate Christmas in the downtown area.

“There’s something for kids of every age and adults, too,” she said.

The parade starts at 7 p.m. Saturday near the Carlsbad Public Library and travels north on Canyon Street and ends at the Beach Area.- The public is invited to dress warmly and line up along the parade route to watch.

Jeff Forrest, Ward 4 Carlsbad City Councilor and a Carlsbad MainStreet board member, was expecting plenty of entries for the 2023 Electric Light Parade.

“We’re all excited here on MainStreet,” he said of Saturday’s event.

Night of Lights follows parade

Garwood suggested residents arrive early in downtown Carlsbad as the Night of Lights starts at 4 p.m. at the Halagueño Arts Park.

Christmas caroling "in the snow" is scheduled post parade at the park led by local singer JD Strait.

Performances by the Early College High School choir, Just Dance studio and Carlsbad High School dance team are scheduled.

A $100 prize is offered for first place at this year's first ever dance contest.

Santa Claus and the Grinch will both be on hand to take selfies with.

The night will culminate with the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree.

The event is free to the public. Night of Lights is expected to wrap up at 8 p.m.
