Why Alabama football's Khyree Jackson is out of transfer portal but is about to go back in

Alabama football cornerback Khyree Jackson no longer is in the transfer portal, he announced Thursday. He intends to re-enter on Dec. 5, though.

A week ago, Jackson announced he had entered the portal, but that was changed once it was realized he isn't a graduate transfer. On the Alabama roster, he is classified as a junior.

Until Dec. 5, the only players who can enter the portal are those who are graduate transfers, have a head coaching change or have aid reduced or ended. Dec. 5 is when the transfer portal window opens for undergraduate players.

Once a player enters the portal, he can still return to his team. It just allows other teams to contact him.

On Nov. 21, Nick Saban said Jackson had been suspended. It's unclear whether that suspension is still ongoing or when it started.

Jackson is a JUCO transfer who started for Alabama (10-2) in the College Football Playoff championship game a season ago because of injuries to starters Josh Jobe and Jalyn Armour-Davis.

Jackson has not played for Alabama since the overtime loss to LSU on Nov. 5. Before then, Jackson had primarily been working as a backup behind Kool-Aid McKinstry, Terrion Arnold and Eli Ricks, as well as on special teams. Jackson got one start in the second game of the season against Texas when Alabama was still rotating corners.

Jackson joined Alabama ahead of the 2021 season, transferring in after playing at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College in 2019 and then East Mississippi Community College.
