Why should America bail out Florida?

Re Sen. Rick Scott's op-ed on the Federal Disaster Responsibility Act: I remember when a Republican believed in self-reliance, personal responsibility, states rights and a small federal government. Florida has swollen to over 20 million people, and a state that by an act of God is hurricane central and also lightning and tornado alley should weigh heavily on anyone's decision to migrate to Florida. With natural disasters being a yearly occurrence, maybe it's time for the other 49 states to say the price tag for maintaining and sustaining Florida is unacceptable.

This bill is nothing more than a federal handout or welfare. Floridians, accept responsibility for your decisions and pay your own way. The fact that insurance companies are fleeing a state that is constantly declaring a federal disaster response, should be a wake-up call. Federal intervention is encouraging more homes to be built, inflating property values and essentially placing more life and property in harms way. At the very least rename the Bill the Federal Disaster Irresponsibility Act.

Auto insurance is too high, too

My auto policy increased 222.47%. My car is paid for, I have had no moving violations, no tickets. I live in a zip code prone to bad drivers, accidents, and mayhem on the roads. Two years ago, I had to have the windshield replaced on another car because middle school kids threw rocks at that car as I passed by them one day. Until those “Rich men up north in Tallahassee get a clue” we are at the mercy of the insurance companies who now are only quoting six-month policies.

Florida needs a real Governor

Could we trade in Ron DeSantis for an actual governor? Is Charlie Crist still available? Since winning his election, DeSantis has spent all of his time running for president. Trying to impress a national audience, he burdens Florida with culture-war laws, but leaves its citizens without affordable insurance or any perceptible action toward defending our 8,486-mile coastline against the effects of climate change. Florida deserves a Governor who is paying attention — to us.

GOP political claims less believable

Republicans claim they’re for less government in Americans’ lives. What they mean is fewer regulations on corporations. Republicans love passing laws giving tax breaks for the wealthy with their trickle-down economics while they run up the national debt. Republicans are for government controlling Americans’ personal lives. Republicans did not even have a platform last election, and their current platform is racism, antisemitism, and anti-personal freedoms. Republicans have long put party over America, and now they choose Donald Trump above the law and everything else noble about America; authoritarianism is their goal.
