Why Changing Your Major In College Is Not A Crime

College is already stressful and draining. But adding the realization of being in the wrong major to the mix, creates a mentally disastrous concoction. Picture yourself in bed, and you can barely lift yourself out of it. Your arms drop like lead, with each item you put into your bag. Even your appearance has developed into a seemingly mountainous chore that you don’t have the patience to climb. Despite investing in rest, your days still appear to blend together. It creates a woefully unpleasant image encompassing regret and disdain. Notice how many people struggling with depression may also experience a similar routine. Continuing to pursue a path you’re not passionate about is unhealthy, unfair to yourself, and can ultimately lead to depression.

Switching majors may have some immediate consequences. But neglecting to make the change necessary for your true aspirations will reap an abysmal outcome for the future. Living the mistake of failing to leave your original major will swallow you whole. Your livelihood will revolve around someone else’s passion as opposed to your own. College life is a monumental shift. Whether your experience looks like blinding lights, loud beats filling your ears, and the strong aroma of alcohol wafting through the air or your gaze riding the letters of seven hundred paged books, you’ll be impacted greatly. You’re going to go through some changes. Those changes may result in you reconsidering your major. It’s a very valid and common occurrence.

As passionate as I am about helping patients and sifting through medications as needed, I have my own reasons for possibly revising my major. Even what you’re passionate about fails to escape the trappings of dreary routine. Mining through years of rinse and repeat takes patience. The only thing keeping me focused is the tantalizing vision projected from my introspective eye. The thoughts of me living my dream. If this is the internal battle I have to fight every time I prepare for class, I can only imagine how challenging it must be for people lacking passion for their current studies.

It behooves you to make the shifts essential to your satisfaction and happiness. Loved ones may advise against it, but they won’t be impacted by your decision as much as you will. Ask yourself will they be there whilst you’re in the midst of the stress inducing storm? A storm set off by the daily whims you’ll be privy to. You end up subjecting yourself to an undesired routine. If you feel it’s right to pursue another major, then explore that path. If you stray from your better judgment, your future self may implore their youthful counterpart to consider that other study. Have you ever thought about switching majors?
