Here’s Why Chewy Chips Ahoy Are Being Recalled

Chewy Chips Ahoy are being recalled due to an “unexpected solidified ingredient” found in the cookies. Mondelez International issued the limited recall on Tuesday for its popular treats which are sold at major retailers across the country.

“This voluntary recall is being conducted because of the potential for certain product to contain an unexpected solidified ingredient,” the company announced in a news release, adding, “Some reports of potential adverse health effects have been received.”

A spokesperson for Mondelez, Nabisco’s parent company, explained to CBS News that during the baking process, some of the cornstarch used to make the cookies didn’t mix properly and instead solidified. Those pieces resulted in “gagging, choking or dental injury” reported by what the spokesperson claimed was “a small number of consumers.”

The cookies affected are Chips Ahoy sold in 13-ounce packages, with “best if used by” dates of Sept. 7, 2019; Sept. 8, 2019; Sept. 14, 2019; or Sept. 15, 2019 (which are found on the upper left corner of the package near the lift tab). They also have the UPC code “044000032234.”

According to the company, no other Chips Ahoy or Mondelez products have been affected. Mondelez urges any customers who purchased the cookies not to eat them. Anyone with questions about the recall can contact Mondelez Consumer Relations at 1-844-366-1171.

Additionally, some retailers where the Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies are sold, like Publix, have announced that customers can return the affected packages to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

And while there are still questions about what exactly the “unexpected solidified ingredient” is, one parent shared a photo of the mysterious object which he discovered in his son’s cookies back in March. The picture, posted by Nick Fairchild, shows what he claims are tiny spheres of plastic that he said were “in each cookie I searched.”
