Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence has revealed why Euphoria star Hunter Schafer was chosen to play young Tigris in the upcoming prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Tigris was played by Eugenie Bondurant in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the upcoming prequel set 64 years before the first Hunger Games movie.

Schafer, who played Jules in Euphoria, will play Tigris in the prequel. The role is key as she is the cousin and confidant of Tom Blyth's Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland in the original films). In an interview with EW, Lawrence revealed why Schafer snagged the role.

"She's one of the more authentic people I've ever personally met. So many people came in and read, [but] they were thinking more of Liz Banks' Effie Trinket than they were of Tigris," Lawrence said.

"They're putting on this Capitol effect, and it's just so phony. Hunter came in and did the scene, and she was so endearing and warm."

Coriolanus Snow later becomes the vicious dictator Sutherland portrayed him as but, at the point in the story in which this sequel is set, he and Tigris are close. It's that bond that is so important.

"Their bond is so warm and she's so full of hope. [Tigris] is trying to draw [Coriolanus] into goodness and keep him in goodness."

Tigris eventually becomes a Capitol stylist who joins in the revolt against her cousin's Capitol. This prequel will explore the story before that with new characters played by Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage and Rachel Zegler.

The film released its first trailer in April while a tantalising new trailer dropped last month. Lawrence recently opened up about the Katniss Everdeen Easter egg in that new trailer.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be released in cinemas on November 17, 2023. The previous Hunger Games movies are available to stream on Prime Video UK.
