If you've walked around town this week, you may have noticed the American flag flying half-staff on public and government buildings.

Here's why.

Why are the flags at half-staff in Wisconsin today?

President Joe Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff  "as a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Dianne Feinstein."

Feinstein, a Democrat from California, was the longest-serving female senator in U.S. history. She died in office on Sept. 29 at the age of 90.

In a statement on her death, Biden called Feinstein "a pioneering American and a true trailblazer."

"Senator Feinstein was a role model for so many Americans and she had an immense impact on younger female leaders for whom she generously opened doors," the President's statement said. "She was a historic figure, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations."

Who was Sen. Dianne Feinstein?

Feinstein served as a senator in California for over 30 years ― from 1992 until her death. She was the longest-serving female senator in U.S. history. Following concerns about her health and fitness to serve, Feinstein announced in February that she wouldn't seek reelection in 2024.

Before her time as a senator, Feinstein served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1969 to 1978 and served as mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988. She was the first female president of the Board of Supervisors and became San Francisco's first female mayor following the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk.
