Why this new Frist Art Museum exhibit made the New York Times list of must-see exhibits this fall
The Frist Museum is about to open a new exhibit that has already caught the eye of The New York Times.
Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is expected to open in Ingram Hall on Sept. 15. The exhibit has already been one of several in the country to make it to the list of must-see exhibits on The New York Times list of art shows and exhibitions to see this fall.
"An all-star, intergenerational group of more than 50 artists, including Howardena Pindell, Tschsabalala Self and Kahlil Robert Irving, investigate Black identity through collage," the newspaper wrote about the upcoming exhibit.

What is in the Multiplicity exhibit at the Frist?
Frist touts Multiplicity as the first major museum exhibition devoted to the subject with more than 80 major collage and collage-informed works that, "reflect the breadth and complexity of Black identity."
The exhibit features a group of 52 artists of a wide range of ages.
"... Multiplicity explores the varying ways collage is employed and how the technique suggests diverse conceptual concerns such as cultural hybridity, notions of beauty, gender fluidity, and historical memory. By assembling pieces of paper, photographs, fabric, and salvaged or repurposed materials, these artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives despite our fragmented society," according to the description from the Frist Museum.
