Why are gas prices in Fort Worth below $2.99 a gallon? It has something to do with the cold

The national average price per gallon of gasoline has plunged 38 cents since last month, down to $3.44, which is the lowest it has been since March 28, according to GasBuddy.

Projections by the fuel savings platform show drops of another 10 to 20 cents by the end of the year.

“The fall in gasoline prices is tied to seasonal factors, including declining gasoline consumption as colder weather keeps Americans inside, as well as the changeover to winter gasoline, which has now been done in every state,” the GasBuddy report says.

As many of the refinery snags that have plagued the industry in recent months have been resolved, supply to the pumps have been consistent. Pair this bit of good fortune with the switch from summer to winter fuel, and gasoline prices are dropping.

Here’s why the switch from summer to winter fuel is relevant: “Even though prices are slightly higher for summer blend fuel—because it contains less butane—the summer blend contains 1.7 percent more energy than the winter blend. As a result, your gas mileage should be a little higher in the summer months to offset some of the added cost you pay at the pump,” the American Automobile Association website explains.

“$2.99 gasoline is making a comeback at tens of thousands of stations across the U.S., a huge treat for drivers this Halloween,” GasBuddy says in an email.
